August 25, 2021

Partnering with District agencies on unified response

Overnight, DC Water crews completed repairs to the water main in the 3rd Street Tunnel. The break was on an 8-inch main running through the tunnel.

DC Water and DDOT today are consulting on a path forward for restoration work and the reopening of the southbound tunnel. It is anticipated the southbound portion of the 3rd Street Tunnel between New York Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue will remain closed for several days to complete repairs.

The northbound travel lanes in the tunnel are open and traffic is flowing. Southbound travel lanes remain closed on I-395 between New York Ave. NW and Massachusetts Ave. NW, but are open south of Massachusetts Ave. Early morning police activity in the area closed New York Ave.; however, New York Ave. is now reopened.
