MEDIA ADVISORY

September 17, 2004

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) will officially break ground for the new East Side Pump Station which will minimize combined sewer overflow to the Anacostia River by increasing flow to Blue Plains. It will also help to meet the requirements of the Federal Clean Water Act. This facility will become an integral part of the long-term control plan and, when implemented, will convey combined sewage from the tunnel system to Blue Plains.

This station will replace the existing East Side Pumping Station, which has been in operation since 1962. The new pumping station consists of four 15 million gallons per day (MGD) pumps with a capacity of 45 MGD. The new facility will cost $12.2 million and construction will be completed by August 2006.
